Guess and guard are both action words, but they describe very different actions.

In KS1 Vocabulary Age 6, children learn how useful verbs can change the meaning of a sentence. This topic helps pupils understand words linked to thinking, protecting and making clear choices when they read or write.

  • Verb: A word that tells us what someone or something does.
  • Guess: To give an answer when you are not completely sure.
  • Guard: To watch over or protect someone or something.
What does guess mean for KS1 children?

Guess means to try to answer when you do not know for certain, such as choosing what you think may be correct.

What does guard mean in simple English?

Guard means to protect or look after someone or something, such as guarding a gate, a bag or a special place.
