Fascinating Fact:

Different parts of the world have different climates, such as tropical rainforests, hot deserts, temperate zones, and icy polar regions.

In KS2 Geography, pupils explore how the Earth is divided into different climate zones and regions. They learn how temperature, rainfall, and location affect the landscapes, wildlife, and ways people live across the world.

  • Climate: The usual weather of a place over a long time, including how hot, cold, wet, or dry it is.
  • Biome: A large region of the world with a similar climate, plants, and animals, such as a desert or rainforest.
  • Continent: One of the Earth’s main land masses, such as Africa, Asia, Europe, or South America.
What are the main climate zones of the world?

The main climate zones are tropical, temperate, polar, desert, and mountainous regions. Each zone has its own typical temperatures, rainfall, and types of plants and animals.

How does the equator affect climate?

The equator receives the most direct sunlight, so places near it are usually hotter and wetter, with tropical climates and rainforests, while areas further away are often cooler.

Why do some countries have more than one climate?

Some countries are very large or have mountains, coasts, and plains. Changes in height, wind, and distance from the sea can create several different climates in one country.
