Fascinating Fact:

les États-Unis means “the United States”.

In KS3 Fast French, learning country names helps you build simple, useful sentences about identity and travel. This quiz focuses on common countries, how to use “en” or “aux”, and how to say where you are from.

  • Country noun: The name of a country, such as France or Spain, used when talking about places.
  • Preposition: A short word that shows place or direction, such as “en” (in/to) or “aux” (to the).
  • Nationality: A word that describes where someone is from, often linked to a country name.
How do you say the United States in French?

You say the United States as “les États-Unis” in French. It is plural, so you usually use plural forms with it, such as “aux États-Unis” for “to the United States”.

How do I say I am from a country in French at KS3?

You can say where you are from using “Je viens de” plus the place, for example “Je viens de France”. For some places you use “du”, “de la” or “des” depending on gender and plural forms.

Why do some countries use en and others use aux in French?

Many feminine countries use “en”, for example “en France”. Plural country names use “aux”, for example “aux États-Unis”. The choice depends on whether the country name is feminine, masculine, or plural.

In each question you will be given a word or words in English. All you have to do is choose the French equivalent from the four choices offered.
