Grade 1 Language - Conjunctions

Conjunctions should be introduced to first graders. They may include the simpler ones like and, or, and but. Using conjunctions will help the first graders strengthen their sentences. Since conjunctions are used for different reasons, the students will need the practice pertaining to these differences. In the quiz, the students will use the picture to determine how to add a conjunction to the sentence.

This should be used because both of these things are in the room.

Look at the picture.
What could be added to the sentence?
The boy can only eat one vegetable. He will eat peas ____

or corn.
but corn.
because corn.
Since the boy can only choose one, or must be used.
3.
Look at the picture.
What could be added to the sentence?
The woman is happy ____
or the man is happy.
or the man is sad.
and the man is happy too.
but the man is sad.
These are opposite feelings, so the word should be but.

Look at the picture.
What could be added to the sentence?
The man wears a crown ____
but the girl wears a crown.
and the girl wears a crown too.
or the girl wears a crown.
because a girl wears a crown.
Since both are wearing crowns, the word and should be used.
5.
Look at the picture.
What could be added to the sentence.
My house has a flag ____
and my friend has a flag too.
but my friend has a flag too.
or my friend has a flag too.
because my friend has a flag too.
Since both houses have flags, the word and should be used.

Look at the picture.
What could be added to the sentence?
The boy must pick the cake ____
and the apple.
or the apple.
but the apple.
because the apple.
The boy must choose, so the word or should be added.

Look at the picture.
What could be added to the sentence?
Sarah wants a clean dress ____
and it is dirty.
or it is dirty.
but it is dirty.
because it is dirty.
Sarah can't wear it. She wants to wear it, but it is dirty.
8.
Look at the picture.
What could be added to the sentence?
Sally will eat both. She eats an apple for lunch ____
and she will eat a pear at dinner.
but she will eat a pear at dinner.
or she will eat a pear at dinner.
because she will eat a pear at dinner.
Since Sally will eat both fruits, the word and should be used.

The man wears black ____
and the woman wears blue.
or the woman wears blue.
so the woman wears blue.
because the woman wears blue.
Both people are wearing colors, so the word and should be used.
10.
Look at the picture.
What could be added to the sentence?
The boy is in the wagon ____
but the dog is not in the wagon.
or the man pushes the wagon.
but the man pushes the wagon.
because the dog is not in the wagon.
Since the boy is in the wagon and the man is pushing the wagon, the word but should be used.
