Grade 1 Language - Conjunctions

Conjunctions should be introduced to first graders. They may include the simpler ones like and, or, and but. Using conjunctions will help the first graders strengthen their sentences. Since conjunctions are used for different reasons, the students will need the practice pertaining to these differences. In the quiz, the students will use the picture to determine how to add a conjunction to the sentence.

These are opposite feelings, so the word should be but.

The man wears a crown ____
but the girl wears a crown.
and the girl wears a crown too.

because a girl wears a crown.
Since both are wearing crowns, the word and should be used.

Since both houses have flags, the word and should be used.

The boy must choose, so the word or should be added.

Sarah can't wear it. She wants to wear it, but it is dirty.

What could be added to the sentence?

or she will eat a pear at dinner.
because she will eat a pear at dinner.
Since Sally will eat both fruits, the word and should be used.

Both people are wearing colors, so the word and should be used.

because the dog is not in the wagon.
Since the boy is in the wagon and the man is pushing the wagon, the word but should be used.
