Grade 1 Reading Literature - Character Details

Illustrations and details in a story can help students comprehend a story. Illustrations can relay the message and events about the characters and setting. Since illustrations are visual depictions of the story, this will give the students an image to add to the events of the story. Understanding the details while analyzing the illustrations will help students figure out the story's message. This quiz allows the student to practice answering questions about the characters and events using the details of the story as well as the illustrations.

Story 1 - Lost Money

Sandy cried. She had lost her money. There was a hole in her pocket. It must have fallen out this morning. Sandy ran back to her mother.

“Have you seen my money?” Sandy asked. Sandy’s mother shook her head no. Sandy then ran into her brother’s room.

“Have you seen my money?” Sandy asked. Her brother shook his head no. Sandy then went to her piggy bank. She got the money out. The money she lost was in her piggy bank.

Story 2 - Scared Matt

Matt pulls his covers up. He should be asleep. It is late. He can’t sleep. He hears noises. He listens. There is silence for about two minutes. Then he hears a sound. He looks around his room. He sees nothing. Matt is scared. He hears the sound again. Then his dog jumps onto Matt’s bed. Matt knows the noise is his dog.
