Grade 2 Writing - Opinion Pieces

Most students can give their opinions, but they need to be able to state their opinion in a formal piece of writing. They should include the topic, their opinion and reasons to support their opinion. In addition to that, their writing should incorporate connecting words. It should also have a conclusion to wrap up their writing piece. In this quiz, the students will answer questions about writing an opinion piece.

Read the sentences below. Which linking word would best connect the sentences?
The cow gives milk. The chicken lays eggs.
The cow gives milk because the chicken lays eggs.
The cow gives milk and the chicken lays eggs.
The cow gives milk because the chicken lays eggs.
The cow and chicken give milk and lay eggs.
Since the two animals do two different things, each function of the animal should be given to its respective animal. So, the word “and” should be used.

I think cars are needed by families. Moms use cars to drive their children to school. Every family should have a car.

This paragraph needs a concluding sentence to wrap up the paragraph.

This is a cause/effect sentence so “because” should be used in this sentence.

On my street, there are ten kids to play with.
The neighborhood is near the trash dump.
Another neighborhood is great too.
I live in a neighborhood.
The fact that there are ten kids living on the author’s street would support the opinion that everyone should live in her neighborhood.

The chocolate cake tastes great.
There are 12 inches in a foot.
This is an opinion because some people may think chocolate cake tastes great and others may not.

Pretty flowers grow in spring.
Spring is better than summer too.
Snow sports take place in the winter.
With flowers growing in the spring, this would be a good reason to like spring.

The duck eats grass and bugs.
The best animal is a dog.
Horses gallop and do not swim.
The word “best” is an opinion word in this sentence.

Read the paragraph. What would be a good concluding sentence?
The rose is the most beautiful flower. People give roses to their friends. Roses are red. They smell good.
Roses grow in gardens.
Roses may hurt you because they have thorns.
Daisies are also pretty flowers.
Roses should be everyone’s favorite flower.
This sentence restates the topic sentence using different words.

Rainy weather is bad.
Rain is formed in the clouds.
Kids can’t play outside in rainy weather.
I sometimes like rainy weather.
Snowy weather is bad too.
Since kids can’t play outside in rainy weather, then rainy weather would be bad.
