In order for a piece of writing to be read smoothly, linking or connecting words should be used. These connecting words are used with different ideas. Sometimes, a similar idea will be related. Then the student will need to use a transition or connecting word to show that these two ideas are similar. Other situations may include sequencing, giving examples, being a reason, contrasting ideas and showing emphasis.
