Grammar - Conjugating ER Verbs - Present Tense (1)
We knit. How would we translate that into Spanish?

Grammar - Conjugating ER Verbs - Present Tense (1)

This Spanish Easy Review grammar quiz will challenge you on conjugating ER verbs in the present tense. If you have already taken the Spanish Easy Review Conjugating AR Verbs - Present Tense (1) and Conjugating AR Verbs - Present Tense (2) quizzes you have become familiar with what conjugating means. Conjugating means to break the verb down in parts to form the correct verb spelling that goes along with the correct pronoun (I, you, he, she, we, they). When you conjugate, you take the base form of the verb and then drop the last two letters.

In other words, as we are dealing with ER present tense verbs in this quiz, if you take the verb 'beber' (to drink), you drop the 'er' which leaves you with beb.

Now we add on one of the present tense endings for ER verbs which are - o, es, e, emos, éis, en. These endings are added to beb as follows:

Pronoun Present Tense English Meaning
yo bebo I drink
bebes you drink (familiar)
usted bebe you drink (formal)
él bebe he drinks
ella bebe she drinks
nosotros/as bebemos we drink (note the masculine and feminine forms)
vosotros/as bebéis you drink (plural – familiar)
ustedes beben you drink (plural – formal)
ellos/ellas beben they drink (note the masculine and feminine forms)

As you learned with the AR verbs, the conjugation of all ER regular verbs will be done in the same manner as listed above. Always remember to pay attention to your pronouns and whether you are dealing with a male, a female, a mixture of both and singular and plural familiar persons and/or singular and plural formal persons.

When you believe you understand how to conjugate ER verbs, move on to the quiz section. It contains ten present tense verbs in English with their corresponding pronouns. From the answers provided, determine the correct Spanish verb and pronoun that will match.

1.
she reads
usted lee
ella lee
él lee
nosotras leemos
First determine what the pronoun should be. The Spanish pronoun for 'she' is ella. This means that the first, third and last answers are each incorrect. The second answer shows the correct pronoun, as well as the correct present tense of the verb 'she reads'.
2.
we see (ladies)
nosotras vemos
ustedes ven
ellas ven
nosotros vemos
First look at the pronoun. The pronoun here is 'we' and we know it means all girls. The Spanish pronoun for 'we' when it is all girls is nosotras. This means that the second, third and last answers are each incorrect. The first answer, however, shows the correct pronoun and the correct present tense of the verb 'we see'.
3.
you sell (nephews)
usted vende
nosotros vendemos
vosotros vendéis
ustedes venden
First determine which pronoun should be used. Here we have the pronoun 'you' and 'you' refers to nephews. As there is more than one nephew we know we need to use a plural form of the pronoun and nephews are familiar so we need the plural, familiar form of the pronoun 'you'. As nephews are male, we also need the masculine form of the pronoun. The plural, familiar, masculine Spanish pronoun for 'you' is vosotros. The third answer shows the correct pronoun and present tense form of the verb 'you sell'.
4.
I possess
usted posee
ella posee
tú posees
yo poseo
The quickest way to find the answer is to determine the right pronoun. The Spanish pronoun for 'I' is yo. Now you can quickly eliminate the first, second and third answers. The last answer shows the correct pronoun and present tense form of the verb 'I possess'.
5.
you break (crowd)
tú rompes
vosotros rompéis
ustedes rompen
usted rompe
The first thing to look at is the pronoun. The Spanish pronoun for 'you' when it refers to a crowd would be plural and formal as opposed to familiar. The plural, formal version of 'you' is ustedes. This means that the first, second and last answers are not correct. The third answer on the other hand has the correct pronoun and present tense form of the verb 'you break'.
6.
he burns
ella arde
él arde
yo ardo
tú ardes
The first thing to look at is the pronoun. The word 'he' is the pronoun and 'he' in Spanish is él. This tells us that the first, third and last answers are all incorrect which leaves the second answer. The second answer shows the correct pronoun and the correct conjugated present tense form of the verb for 'he burns'.
7.
they catch (boys)
ellos cogen
ellas cogen
ustedes cogen
nosotros cogemos
The first step is to determine the correct pronoun. The Spanish pronoun for 'they' when they are all boys (masculine) is ellos. This means you can eliminate the second, third and last answers. The first answer shows the correct pronoun and present tense of the verb 'they catch'.
8.
you put (grandma)
ellas meten
ella mete
usted mete
tú metes
The first thing to do is to check out the pronoun. The pronoun for 'you' when 'you' is a grandmother means that the person is a feminine, familiar person. The Spanish pronoun for a familiar 'you' person is tú. This means that the first, second and third answers are each incorrect leaving the last answer which does show the correct pronoun and present tense form of the verb 'you put'.
9.
we knit (sisters)
ellas tejen
nosotros tejemos
nosotras tejemos
vosotras tejéis
First look at the pronoun. The pronoun here is 'we' and we know it means all girls. The Spanish pronoun for 'we' when it is all girls is nosotras. This means that the first, second and last answers are each incorrect. The third answer, however, shows the correct pronoun and the correct present tense of the verb 'we knit'.
10.
you cough (cashier)
vosotros toséis
usted tose
tú toses
ustedes tosen
The first thing to look at is the pronoun. The Spanish pronoun for 'you' when it refers to a cashier would be singular and formal as opposed to familiar. The singular, formal version of 'you' is usted. This means that the first, third and last answers are not correct. The second answer on the other hand has the correct pronoun and present tense form of the verb 'you cough'.
