It's About Time!

This Spanish Easy Review picture quiz will help you review how to tell about what time of day it is in Spanish. Learning to be able to tell the time in Spanish can be a little tricky at the beginning – that is until you understand the correct type of question to ask. It all has to do with the hour of the day, i.e., is the hour singular or plural? That will then determine the verb to use.

When it comes to telling the time, remember that you can also tell it in other ways. For example, it is in the morning or in the afternoon. You can also say that it is in the evening or at night or at midnight and so on. You have a plethora of Spanish vocabulary words to use to tell about the time. Therefore, this quiz will throw in a little bit of a variety of telling time in different ways.

Read each of the quiz sentences carefully and check out the word shown in all capitalized letters. Then see if you can determine its Spanish translation. See if you can do it without looking at the answers first and then see if one of those answers matches up to what you believed the translation was. Are you ready to start then? Okay - begin. Remember, time is ticking!

1.
It is time to go for a MORNING run!
amanecer
crepúsculo
medianoche
mañana
The Spanish word for morning is mañana.
2.
Is it still time TO SLEEP?
leer
recordar
dormir
planear
Here you are looking for the base form of a verb. The first answer means 'to read'. The second answer means 'to remember'. The last answer means 'to plan' and the third answer means 'to sleep'.
3.
It is 10:10.
Son las diez y diez.
Son las diez a diez.
Son las diez de diez.
Son las diez en la mañana.
As the time of the day is past 1 o’clock, the verb used needs to be plural. Each answer has correctly used 'son' for 'is'. The second answer reads: It is ten to ten. That is not the correct answer. The third answer reads: It is ten of ten - or - It is ten from ten. That, too, is not correct. The last answer reads: It is ten in the morning. That is definitely not the correct translation of the given sentence. The first answer reads: It is ten past ten. (The literal translation is: It is ten and ten. When translated into English, means: It is ten past ten.)
4.
It is time for AFTERNOON tea.
semana
tarde
mes
década
The Spanish word for afternoon is tarde.
5.
It is 1:23.
Son las uno veinte y tres.
Es las uno y veinte y tres.
Son las uno y veinte tres.
Son las una y veinte y tres.
The rule with telling the time is that the verb 'son' is used for all time other than 1 o’clock. The verb 'es' needs to be used with 1 o’clock. Even though the number 1 is shown here, it is more than just 1 o’clock so 'es' would not be correct in the translation. The second answer can then be eliminated. The first answer reads: They are the one twenty-three. That is not a correct translation. The third answer also reads: They are the one twenty-three. Notice that both the first and third answers are missing the Spanish word of 'y'. The removal or absence of the correct 'y' usage changes the meaning of the time sentences. The last answer read: It is one twenty-three. Also remember that the number 'one' is an adjective here as it is describing the hour. As hour in Spanish is 'hora' and it is a feminine word, then one must also be feminine, i.e., 'una'.
6.
It will take just about sixty-three MINUTES.
meses
millas
minutos
momentos
The Spanish word for minutes is minutos.
7.
We eat at 5:30.
Comemos a cinco y veinte.
Comemos a cinco y treinta.
Comemos a cinco y cuarenta.
Comemos a cinco y tres.
The first answer reads: We eat at twenty past five. It also reads as: We eat as 5:20. That is not the correct answer. The third answer reads: We eat at forty past five and/or, We eat at 5:40. That is also not correct. The last answer reads: We eat at three past five and/or, We eat at 5:03. Again, that is not the correct translation of the given sentence. The second answer reads: We eat at half past five and/or, We eat at 5:30.
8.
What time does the little HAND on this clock tell us?
codo
dedo
brazo
mano
The Spanish word for hand is mano.
9.
¿Qué ____ es?
torta
hora
tarde
medianoche
The first answer means 'cake'. The third answer means 'afternoon'. The last answer means 'midnight' and the second answer means 'hour'. In Spanish when you are asking for the time you are asking: What hour is it?
10.
It is 11:45.
Son cuarenta y cinco y once
Son las once cuarenta cinco.
Son las once cuarenta y cinco.
Son las once y cuarenta y cinco.
The first answer reads: It is forty-five eleven. That is not the correct translation. The second answer reads: There are eleven forty-five. That, too, is not the correct translation. The third answer reads: They are eleven forty-five. Again, that is not a correct translation. It is missing the Spanish word of 'y'. The last answer reads: It is eleven forty-five. Notice that by adding in the Spanish word of 'y' between once and cuarenta it changes it from 'they are' to 'it is'.
