Math - Telling the Time!
If you want to speak Spanish well, you'll have to learn to tell the time in Spanish.

Math - Telling the Time!

This Spanish Easy Review math quiz is a sister quiz to the Spanish Easy Review quiz titled What Time is It? It will give you more practice on answering the question but it will also introduce to you a few other ways in which you can give an answer. This includes adding in some new vocabulary words. These words will include: noon, midnight, afternoon, morning, P.M. and A.M.

Spanish does not normally use P.M. and A.M. when telling time. However, if you wish to use them they would be written as follows.

  • 7:00 P.M. = siete de la tarde
  • 7:00 A.M. = siete de la mañana

Okay, let's take a look at the new vocabulary words.

English Spanish Pronounced (Phonetically) As
afternoon (la) tarde tăr-dāy
midnight (la) medianoche māy-dē-ă-nō-chāy
morning (la) mañana mă-nnă-nă
noon (el) mediodía māy-dē-ō-dē-ă

Remember that to ask the time in Spanish you would say either ¿Qué hora es? or ¿Qué horas son?

With your new time vocabulary, it is time to move onto the quiz. There are ten question asked with an answer given in English. From the four choices given, locate the answer that is the correct Spanish answer to the English answer.

1.
¿Qué hora es? It is three o’clock.
Son de tres.
Son las tres.
Es las tres.
Es de tres.
Be careful here. The question has the verb “es” in it but you were advised that: It is three o’clock. As three is more than one, the verb must be plural. This means that the third and last answers can be eliminated. The first answer reads: It is of three. That is not correct. The second answer read: It is three o’clock.
2.
¿Qué hora es? It is midnight.
Es las doce.
Son medianoche.
Son las doce.
Es medianoche.
Remember that when the question includes the verb 'es' the answer must also contain it. The second and third answers do not. Therefore, they can be eliminated. The first answer reads: 'It is twelve.' That does not match the English answer. The last answer does read: 'It is midnight.' Note: When you are giving a specific time such as 1, 2, 3, etc., you would use the definite article of la or las. However, for midday or midnight you do not need to use the definite article. Therefore, you would simply say 'es medianoche’ for 'it is midnight'.
3.
¿Qué horas son? It is five o’clock in the morning.
Son las cinco en la mañana.
Son las cinco de la mañana.
Son las cinco con la mañana.
Son la cinco de la mañana.
Remember that when the question includes the verb son the answer should also include it. Here, each answer has used the correct verb. The first answer reads 'It is five morning' which is not correct. The third answer reads that 'It is five with the morning.' Again, it is not correct. The last answer includes the wrong, singular article that replaces hour. The second answer does show the correct Spanish answer. When giving a specific time in the morning, the answer is the same as if you were to say 5:00 A.M. That is why the answer reads de la mañana.
4.
¿Qué horas son? It is four fifty-five.
Son las cuatro cincuenta y cinco.
Es las cuatro cuarenta y cinco.
Son las cuatro cuarante y cinco.
Son las cuatro cincuente y cinco.
As the verb son is used in the question, it must appear in the answer. The second answer does not include this form of the verb so it can be eliminated. The third and last answers have misspelled words for forty and fifty. The first answer shows the correct Spanish answer and time.
5.
¿Qué hora es? It is noon.
Es medionoche
Es mediodia
Es mediodía.
Es de mediodia.
Here each answer shows the correct verb “es”. The first answer, however, has misspelled the word medionoche which should be medianoche but that means midnight so the first answer is not correct. The last answer reads: 'It is of noon.' That, too, is not correct. The second answer is missing an accent mark making it an incorrectly spelled word. That leaves the third answer and it is the correct way to say 'it is noon'. Remember, as we are not using a specific hour here, the definite article is not needed.
6.
¿Qué horas son? It is 6:00 P.M.
Son las seis de la tarde.
Son las ocho de la tarde.
Son las seis de la mañana.
Son las sies de la mañana.
The correct form of the verb 'son' has been given in each answer so the next step is to look at the time. The second answer reads eight, not six so it is not correct. The third answer reads 'It is 6:00 A.M.' It, too is not correct. The last answer has misspelled the word for six leaving. This means that the first answer is the correct way to say 'It is 6:00 P.M.
7.
¿Qué hora es? It is morning.
Son la mañana.
Es una mañana.
Es las mañana.
Es la mañana.
As the question has used the verb es, so too should the answer include it. This means that the first answer can be eliminated. The second answer reads 'It is a morning' which is not correct. The third answer has used the incorrect article in this case. The article refers to morning and not hour. This is because there is no specific hour given. Since morning is singular, the article needs to be singular. The last answer shows the correct Spanish answer with the singular article.
8.
¿Qué horas son? It is 1:00 A.M.
Son de la mañana.
Es la una de la mañana.
Son la una de la mañana.
Es una la mañana.
As the verb son has been used the answer must also use it except when the hour is one o’clock. When it is one o’clock, the verb es needs to be used. This means that the first and third answers can be eliminated. The last answer reads 'It is one morning.' That is not the correct answer. The second answer does show the correct Spanish answer.
9.
¿Qué hora es? It is afternoon.
Es la tarde.
Es las tarde.
Son la tarde.
Son las tarde.
As the question has used the verb es the answer must also include that form of the verb. The third and last answers do not so they can be eliminated. As there is no specific hour given, the article for hour will not be included in the answer. As the answer is afternoon it does use its own article and since it is singular, the article must also be singular. The second answer shows a plural article so it is not correct. The first answer does show the correct Spanish answer.
10.
¿Qué horas son? It is two thirty.
Son las does y trienta.
Son las dos y treinte.
Son las dos y treinta.
Son las dos y triente.
Here each answer has the correct verb form of son, the correct Spanish word for two (dos) and the correct article that replaces hours. However, the first, second and last answers have each misspelled the word for thirty. The third answer does spell thirty correctly and shows the correct Spanish answer.
