# Math - Adding Big Numbers in Spanish

In this Spanish Medium Review quiz you will be looking at adding big numbers in Spanish. To take a look back, in the Spanish Easy Review quiz series you learned how to count to one hundred (100). Here in the Spanish Medium Review series you have learned how to count to nine hundred ninety-nine billion nine hundred ninety-nine million nine hundred ninety-nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine (999,999,999,999)! Doesn’t that just blow your mind away?

Okay, so you haven’t tackled the billions but they are done exactly the same way as the millions so, technically, you can count all the way up to 999,999,999,999! As you may recall, the word billion in Spanish is billón and a billion is un billón. If you could only count in Spanish that would be pretty impressive but what is even more impressive is that you can do math in Spanish. Oh come on, that’s a fun fact don’t you think!?

If you took the Spanish Easy Review math quizzes you already understand how you are able to do math. Yes, writing out the numerical numbers would be the same in both English and Spanish. However, to help you get better acquainted with the Spanish numbers, we are going to do math by writing out the numbers using letters. Let’s look at the following example.

veinte y cinco + treinta y dos = cincuenta y siete (25 + 32 = 57)

It is pretty simple when your answer doesn’t need to go above one hundred but when you get to big numbers, there are rules that you need to remember. For example, only one hundred (100) is cien. Starting with one hundred and one (101) it becomes ciento and starting with the number one hundred and one (101) the 'y' is no longer used so that one hundred and one in Spanish is ciento uno and NOT ciento y uno.

To say two hundred in Spanish you do not say dos cientos but rather doscientos. A thousand is mil, a million is un millón and, once again, a billion is un billón. There are a few more rules to remember so if you have forgotten any of the rules, please check out the Spanish Medium Review math quizzes titled Counting in the Hundreds, Counting in the Thousands and Counting in the Millions before taking the quiz section here as it is important that you know the correct structure of how to say the answer. When you believe you understand that structure and order of your numbers then please move on to the quiz. There are ten addition problems. See if you can find the correct Spanish answer. Be sure to watch for the form, spelling and order of numbers.

1.
doscientos ochenta + seiscientos nueve = ____
nuevecientos ochenta y nueve
ocho cientos y ochenta y nueve
novecientos ochenta y nueve
ochocientos ochenta y nueve
doscientos ochenta + seiscientos nueve is (289 + 609 = 889). We now know that 800 will be in our answer. The third answer has 900 in the answer so it is not correct and the first answer has improperly written 900. Although 9 is nueve, when you say 900, nueve is changed to nove. The second answer shows the incorrect form to say 800 and it shows a 'y' after 800 which is incorrect. The last answer shows the correct spelling and correct form and shows the number 889 which is the correct big number answer.
2.
quinientos cincuenta y tres + cuatrocientos quince = ____
novecientos sesenta y ocho
novecientos seisenta y ocho
novecientos setenta y ocho
novecientos noventa y ocho
quinientos cincuenta y tres + cuatrocientos quince is (553 + 415 = 968). The second answer shows a misspelling for the number 60. The third answer shows the number 978 and the last answer shows the number 998 both of which are not correct. The first answer shows the correct spelling, form and answer as it shows the number 968.
3.
trescientos veinte y dos + setecientos once = ____
un mil treinta y dos
mil treinta y tres
un mil y treinta y tres
mil treinta y dos
trescientos veinte y dos + setecientos once is (322 + 711 = 1,033). As you now know that the number is going to end with a 3, i.e., tres, you can eliminate the first and last answers as they end with a 2 (dos). In addition, one thousand is simply mil, it is not un mil. Therefore, the first and third answers can be eliminated for using the improper form. The second answer shows the proper spelling form and answer of 1,033.
4.
cuatro mil doscientos noventa y uno + seis mil cuatrocientos cuarenta y cinco = ____
diez mil y setecientos treinta y seis
diez mil setecientos y treinta y seis
diez mil setecientos treinta y seis
diez mil sesecientos treinta y seis
cuatro mil doscientos noventa y uno + seis mil cuatrocientos cuarenta y cinco is (4,291 + 6,445 = 10,736). The first and second answers show improper form as the 'y' is not correctly used in either answer. The last answer has a misspelling for what looks to have been for 600 rather than 700. The third answer shows the correct spelling, form and answer of 10,236.
5.
veinte y nueve mil seiscientos setenta y siete + cuarenta y ocho mil trescientos noventa = ____
setenta y ocho mil sesenta y siete
setenta y siete mil setenta y siete
setenta y seis mil sesenta y siete
setenta y ocho sesenta y siete
veinte y nueve mil seiscientos setenta y siete + cuarenta y ocho mil trescientos noventa is (29,677 + 48,390 = 78,067). The second answer is the number 77,077 so it is not correct. The third answer is the number 76,067 and it, too, is not the correct number. The last answer reads as 7877 – the word for thousand is missing. The first answer is the number 78,067. It is the correct spelling, correct form and correct number.
6.
noventa y cuatro mil ochocientos cincuenta y cinco + catorce mil ochocientos setenta y nueve = ____
ciento y nueve mil y setecientos treinta y cuatro
ciento nueve mil setecientos treinta y cuatro
ciento y nueve mil setecientos treinta y cuatro
ciento nueve mil sietecientos treinta y cuatro
noventa y cuatro mil ochocientos cincuenta y cinco + catorce mil ochocientos setenta y nueve is (94,855 + 14,879 = 109,734). The first and third answers have improperly used the 'y' in their answer. There should be no 'y' after ciento and no 'y' after mil. The last answer has misspelled the number 700. The second answer is the number 109,734. It is the correct spelling, correct form and correct number.
7.
trescientos cuarenta y dos mil novecientos doce + cuatrocientos sesenta y seis mil cincuenta y uno = ____
novecientos ocho mil novecientos sesenta y tres
setecientos ocho mil novecientos sesenta y tres
ochocientos ocho mil novecientos sesenta y tres
seiscientos ocho mil novecientos sesenta y tres
trescientos cuarenta y dos mil novecientos doce + cuatrocientos sesenta y seis mil cincuenta y uno is (342,912 + 466,051 = 808,963). The first answer is the number 908,963. That is not correct. The second answer is the number 708,963. That too is not correct. The last answer is the number 608,963. Again, that is not correct. The third answer is the number 808,963. It is the correct spelling, correct form and correct number.
8.
quinientos veinte y siete mil seiscientos ochenta y tres + novecientos diez y seis mil doscientos diez y siete = ____
un millon cuatrocientos cuarenta y tres mil novecientos
un millón y cuatrocientos cuarenta y tres mil novecientos
millón cuatrocientos cuarenta y tres mil novecientos
un millón cuatrocientos cuarenta y tres mil novecientos
quinientos veinte y siete mil seiscientos ochenta y tres + novecientos diez y seis mil doscientos diez y siete is (527,683 + 916,217 = 1,443,900). The first answer has misspelled millon it must contain an accent mark over the 'o'. The second answer has improperly placed a 'y' after millón. The 'y' is not needed here. The third answer has improperly shown one million as millón. An un must come before millón to show that it is one million. The last answer is the number “1,443,900. It is the correct spelling, the correct form and the correct number.
9.
dos millones trescientos cuarenta y ocho mil ciento treinta y nueve + tres millones seiscientos ochenta y dos mil setecientos veinte y cuatro = ____
seis millón treinta mil ochocientos sesenta y tres
seis millónes treinta mil ochocientos sesenta y tres
seis millones treinta mil ochocientos sesenta y tres
seis millones treinta mil y ochocientos sesenta y tres
dos milliones trescientos cuarenta y ocho mil ciento treinta y nueve + tres millones seiscientos ochenta y dos mil setecientos veinte y cuatro is (2,348,139 + 3,682,724 = 6,030,863). As the answer will begin with six million the word million in Spanish (millón) must be made plural. When an accent mark appears in the last syllable of a word and that word is being made into a plural word, the accent mark is dropped. Therefore, millón becomes millones. The first answer has not made the word millón plural so it is not correct and the second answer did not drop the accent mark on millones. It, too, is not correct. The last answer has improperly placed a 'y' after mil. The third answer is the number “6,030,863”. It is the correct spelling, correct form and correct number.

When saying one billion in Spanish it must be stated as un billón. The first answer is missing the un so it is not correct. The third answer is missing the accent mark over the 'o' in billón. The last answer has improperly pluralized the word billion to be billions. The second answer is the number “1,300,548,170. It is correctly spelled, the correct form and the correct number.
