Fascinating Fact:

comme means “as/since”, tandis que means “whereas”.

In GCSE Fast French, conjunctions and connectives help you build longer, clearer sentences by joining clauses and organising ideas. They let you explain reasons, show results, add extra points, and compare viewpoints, which is exactly what strong GCSE writing and speaking need.

  • Conjunction: A linking word that joins words, phrases, or clauses, helping your sentence flow.
  • Connective: A word or phrase that shows the relationship between ideas, such as cause, contrast, time, or result.
  • Clause: A group of words with a verb, which can stand alone or be joined to another clause.
What are conjunctions and connectives in GCSE French?

In GCSE French, conjunctions and connectives are linking words that join ideas together. They help you move beyond short sentences and show meaning like addition, contrast, time, or cause.

How can I use connectives to get better marks in GCSE French writing?

Use a range of connectives to link opinions and explanations, not just “and”. Mixing time, reason, and contrast links makes your writing sound more natural and more developed.

Where do French conjunctions go in a sentence?

French conjunctions usually sit between the two ideas they link. If a conjunction introduces a new clause, you normally follow it with a subject and verb to complete the meaning.
