Fascinating Fact:

Lisez means “Read” (formal/plural), Lis means “Read” (informal).

In GCSE Fast French, instructions help you understand what you are being asked to do, and they also help you give clear directions yourself. Many instructions use the imperative (command form), and the wording can change depending on whether the situation is formal, informal, singular, or plural.

  • Imperative: A verb form used to give an order, instruction, or advice, such as “Write!” or “Listen!”
  • Formal address: Language used with “vous” to sound polite, especially with adults you do not know or in official settings.
  • Informal address: Language used with “tu” for friends, family, and people your age.
What does “imperative” mean in GCSE French?

In GCSE French, the imperative is the verb form used for commands and instructions, like “Écoutez” (Listen) or “Regarde” (Look). It tells someone what to do.

How can I tell if a French instruction is formal or informal?

A formal instruction usually uses the “vous” form, often ending in -ez, like “Écrivez” (Write). An informal instruction uses the “tu” form, like “Écris” (Write).

Why do French instructions matter in exams?

French instructions matter because they tell you exactly what to do, such as choosing the correct answer, writing a short response, or giving opinions. Misreading the instruction can cost marks.
