Fascinating Fact:

un centre-ville means “a town centre”, un quartier means “a neighbourhood”.

In GCSE Fast French, place nouns help you talk about where you live, where you are going, and what you can do in a town. They are especially useful for travel, free-time plans, role-plays, and describing your local area in writing and speaking.

  • Definite article: The word for “the” in French, such as le, la, l’, or les, chosen to match the noun.
  • Preposition of place: A linking word that shows location or movement, like “to”, “in”, or “at”, used before a place name.
  • Location phrase: A short chunk you can reuse to say where something is or where you are going, often built from a preposition plus a place.
How do I say where I live in French for GCSE?

Use a simple sentence with your town or area, then add a detail. For example, say “I live in…” and include something like a nearby place, what it is like, or what you can do there.

What is the difference between “à” and “en” for places in French?

“À” is commonly used with towns and many small places, while “en” is often used with feminine countries and regions. Learning set examples helps you choose the right one quickly in exams.

How do I ask for directions in French GCSE speaking?

Start with a polite question, then name the place you want. Useful patterns include “Where is…?” and “How do I get to…?” followed by short direction words like left, right, and straight on.

In each question you will be given a word or words in English. All you have to do is choose the French equivalent from the four choices offered.
