Fascinating Fact:

“Un sac” is a bag, and you will often hear “un sac à dos” for a backpack.

In GCSE Fast French, school-item nouns help you talk about what you have in your bag, what you use in lessons, and what you need for homework. This topic is also useful for practising genders, articles, and simple “I have” and “I need” sentence patterns.

  • Article indéfini: The French word for “a” or “an”, such as un or une, used before a noun.
  • Article partitif: A word that means “some” in French, often used with uncountable items, such as food or materials.
  • Accord: Agreement, where words match in gender and number, for example using the correct article for a plural noun.
How do I say “I have” and “I need” in French for school items?

Use j’ai for “I have” and j’ai besoin de for “I need”. Then add the item with the correct article, and use des when the noun is plural.

What is the best way to learn French school vocabulary for GCSE?

Learn items in small groups, practise with the article, and put each word into a short sentence. Regular quick quizzes help you remember spelling and recognise the words in reading tasks.

How do I know if a French school noun is masculine or feminine?

Memorise the noun with its article, such as un or une. If you are unsure, check a dictionary, then practise the word again using the correct article in a sentence.

In each question you will be given a word or words in English. All you have to do is choose the French equivalent from the four choices offered.
