About Richard III

Richard III ruled England from 1483 to 1485 and was the last Plantagenet king. His defeat at the Battle of Bosworth helped bring the Wars of the Roses to an end and began the Tudor dynasty.

This section is written in a clear, teacher-friendly way to support KS3 learning and GCSE revision. Each quiz builds background knowledge, strengthens key vocabulary, and helps learners explain events and interpretations with more confidence.

Use The Spoken Word to explore language and persuasion, and Benevolent King? to consider why historians disagree about his character. The everyday world of the period comes through in The Coats They Wore and Dress Sense, helping learners connect politics with real life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Richard III important to study?

Richard III sits at a turning point in English history. His reign links the Wars of the Roses to the start of Tudor rule, and it raises big questions about power, legitimacy and reputation.

Why do historians disagree about Richard III?
