Adverbs

Adverbs make French sound natural, telling when, how often or how. This quiz practises common adverbs and where to place them in sentences.

Fascinating Fact:

toujours means “always”, jamais means “never”.

In GCSE Fast French, adverbs help you add detail and sound more fluent. They can explain time, frequency and manner, and you often need correct word order for strong marks in writing and speaking.

  • Adverb: A word that adds information about a verb, an adjective, or the whole sentence, for example how, when, or how often something happens.
  • Frequency: How often an action happens, such as regularly, sometimes, or rarely.
  • Word order: The position of words in a sentence, which matters in French because meaning can change if an adverb is placed incorrectly.
Where do adverbs go in a French sentence?

Many adverbs go after the main verb, but with two-part tenses they often sit between the auxiliary and the past participle. Some adverbs can also go at the start or end for emphasis.

How do you form adverbs in French?

Many French adverbs are formed by adding “-ment” to the feminine form of an adjective, such as “rapide” becoming “rapidement”. Some common adverbs are irregular and must be learnt.

What is the difference between adjectives and adverbs in French?

Adjectives describe nouns and usually agree in gender and number. Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or the whole sentence, and they do not normally change to match a noun.
