Fascinating Fact:

immédiatement means “immediately”, finalement means “finally”.

In GCSE Fast French, time-related adverbs make your writing and speaking clearer by showing when actions happen. Getting their position right also improves accuracy in longer sentences.

  • Time adverb: A word or phrase that tells when something happens, such as earlier, today, or soon.
  • Time marker: A clue in a sentence that places an event in the past, present, or future.
  • Sentence position: The place a word goes in a sentence, which can affect meaning and how natural your French sounds.
Where do time adverbs go in French sentences?

Time adverbs can often go at the start or end of a sentence for emphasis. In compound tenses, many short adverbs also fit between the auxiliary verb and the past participle.

How do I know if a French word is an adverb of time?

An adverb of time answers the question “when?” about the action, for example whether it happens now, later, or already. It usually adds extra timing detail without changing the subject.

Do time adverbs change in French like adjectives?

Most time adverbs do not change for gender or plural, so they stay the same form. This makes them easier to learn than adjectives, which often need different endings.

In each question you will be given a word or words in English. All you have to do is choose the French equivalent from the four choices offered.
